Considering how Korea has a very unique, signature fashion style, it means naturally there'll be a disconnect and they can only adapt so much. Pretty sure people expected them to wear tshirts and such in tiny desk but did BTS stylists really understand that casual means really freaking casual. Which means not just them, but their team, their stylists, producers, event arrangers, there is high probability that someone or some part would not fully get the "vibe/requirements". BTS is the first group of its kind/genre from their country to get a chance to perform on such shows. The Grammy Drunk In Love performance was pretty bare bones for her style. Now everyone has elevated their music fest production.
